Forest Growth and Timber Quality

چکیده
F OR ESTER S ROUTINELY ESTIM ATE THE economic potential of a standing forest resource as lumber. It is usual to consider the straightness and size of a tree to estimate gross recovery and the range of lumber products that might be produced. However, such estimates are usually subjective and depend on the knowledge and experience of the assessor. Several conversion modeling packages are available to assist with such appraisals, but these require an established library of log data, or require detailed and expensive log measurements. Fortunately, many tree attributes that influence lumber out-turn can be easily and objectively appraised, and these easy-to-measure attributes can be used to infer a larger suite of log characteristics. This paper briefly describes a computer-based conversion modelling system that emulates components of a woodprocessing system and enables users to create a custom wood-processing facility producing lumber, veneer, or other products. It examines the attributes of trees that need to be quantified for such simulation to proceed, describes how routine timber cruising can record these details, and discusses how a user may modify these attributes to reflect di!erent silvicultural regimes. It also describes the accounting module which enables detailed financial analysis of conversion strategies, and of the whole value chain. The system challenges forest managers to examine silvicultural options in a broader context, focusing not on a “better log”, but on creating more value in the lumber marketplace. INTRODUCTION

Forest environmental investments and implications for climate change mitigation.
Forest environmental conditions are affected by climate change, but investments in forest environmental quality can be used as part of the climate change mitigation strategy. A key question involving the potential use of forests to store more carbon as part of climate change mitigation is the impact of forest investments on the timing and quantity of forest volumes that affect carbon storage. U...
متن کاملForest Growth and Timber Quality: Crown Models and Simulation Methods for Sustainable Forest Management
ECOSYSTEMS CAN BE MODELED AT MANY different hierarchical levels. The phenomenon being simulated has a context represented by the next higher level of ecosystem organization, as well as driving mechanisms represented by the next lower level of ecosystem organization. In this sense, the level at which mechanisms are represented in models of tree crowns depends on the crown attributes or processes...
متن کاملTrends in China’s forest-related policies from the perspective of the growing timber trade
This paper presents a short-term analysis of recent timber trends in China, focusing on timber markets and trade, and on forest-related policies. Firstly, trends in China’s timber supply and demand are described highlighting the sharp increase in log imports, especially from Russia. Secondly, the key policy trends that have a#ected China’s domestic timber market, including trade policy, forest ...
متن کاملThe Forest Sector in a Climate-Changed Environment—A Briefing
Across the globe and in the U.S., it is anticipated that forest resources in rural and urban settings will be affected by climate-change induced impacts to forest growing conditions, including CO 2 fertilization and disturbance regimes. These changing forest conditions are projected to trace through to changes in management regimes, production practices, and, potentially, the uses of timberland...
متن کاملThe Economics of Timber Supply: an Analytical Synthesis of Modeling Approaches
The joint supply of timber and other services from forest environments plays a central role in most forest land debates. This paper defines a general conceptual model of timber supply that provides the context for discussing both individual harvest choice and aggregate supply models. While the structure and breadth of these models has developed considerably over the last twenty years, unresolve...
متن کاملA Hierarchical Timber Allocation Model to Analyze Sustainable Forest Management Decisions
A two-level Hierarchical Timber Allocation model was developed that iteratively negotiates medium-term (sustainable forest management) decisions with operational (lumber production) plans. At the medium-term level, a multi-criteria timber allocation model optimally allocates forest land units, called stewardship units, to different forest products companies based on five sustainability criteria...
